Behind the scenes

The Voice of a Generation

In December 2006, a group of 12 – 19 year olds from across the Lewisham borough, supported by JUMP, came together to create a project that would not only give young people a platform to speak out but also encourage a collective voice of change.

The project, aptly named ‘Behind Da Scenes’, was created by this group, desiring more than anything, to say what they felt needed to be said. Having successfully applied for funding for part of the project, the members worked passionately in order to achieve highlights such as; collating the thoughts of over 200 young people from Lewisham schools and the community via a survey and based on those findings starting production on a 60-minute documentary which also included the views of local youth workers, parents and young people from varying backgrounds. The group also organised a Speak Out evening, open forum style and panel discussion, lead by the young people and attended by their peers, parents, the police, teachers, youth workers and other youth –service workers. The success of the evening has led to its expansion in 2008.
