| JUMP Summer Internship |
|
|
As the anticipated, few summer weeks approach, most young people prepare to relish the few weeks of fun in the sun (though the London weather always has a few surprises for all of us.)
We have therefore developed a scheme which caters for the passion for fun, adventure and excitement whilst also providing opportunities for training and work experience.
JSI is a voluntary scheme which is run by JUMP and was developed in June 2006. The remit of this project is to offer a young person the opportunity to work as a volunteer at JUMP for a period of at least 8 weeks over the summer break. As a summer intern the young person not only shadows the organisation's Youth Projects Manager, but JUMP also creates opportunities for the young person to develop skills in youth work, public speaking, project management, team work and more.
The young person also undertakes leadership of at least one major project. The young person is also prepared for the next academic year by undergoing sessions in career advice before leaving with a portfolio of achievements and an updated CV. |
Liz’s Story |
|
The summer holidays was approaching and I had an important choice to make- I could either return to my retail job at JD Sports as a Sales Assistant-- which I woefully dreaded or I could find some useful work experience where I could put my skills and talents into practice, and gain a range of skills that will develop my personal and professional development When I came across the JUMP 2K website, the charity seemed too good to be true. I admired their mission to empower young people and I commended their efforts and achievements at home and internationally.
And what an opportunity it was! In fact,my placement at JUMP 2K provided me with more opportunities and experiences than I could have ever hoped for. Within a mere few weeks, I found myself attending workshops at secondary schools; leading icebreakers and games for the Youth Leadership Programme; running my own Recycled Fashion project called ‘JUNK to FUNK' for Sista A.C.T.T; attending a meeting at Catford Town Hall and even getting involved in some filming for Christian Aid! As you can see, my placement at JUMP 2K was incredibly eventful and productive- yet still, I found it incredibly difficult to believe that within a short space of time, I could do so much and learn so much!

I realised that JUMP 2K played a significant role in their lives by enriching them with positive thinking and simultaneously navigating their pathway to adulthood by shaping them into confident, articulate, active role models.
